Olia Lialina’s “Anna Karenin Goes to Paradise” (1994-6)

Anna Karenin Goes to Paradise, an internet based work by Olia Lialina is a narrative work that features undertones of explorations of the functionality of the search engine. This comedic net art installation contains several references to pre Google search engines. The work itself is featured on the website http://www.teleportacia.org/anna/ and is broken down into three comedic “acts”.

This work compiles several different disciplines as it explores literature through the use of inspiration drawn from Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel Anna Karenin, as well as search engines from the time before Google existed. Lialina’s interpretation of concepts of love and paradise are rather unique as they are displayed within her work.

One thing that I found interesting is the use of search engines other than Google in this work. Google is the most prominent search engine in today’s society. We use Google so frequently, and for me, Google is my go to whenever I need to know something or do a quick look up. I think the artists inclusion of other search engines when put in a modern atmosphere demonstrates a forgotten paradise. A paradise of “abandoned” search engines.

Ultimately, I think this work is successful. Not only is it aesthetically interesting, but it also displays a unique and deeper meaning that causes the viewer to think about those once popular and now forgotten search engines. The authors interpretation of the concepts of love and paradise transfixed with the idea of search engines proposes a unique concept for the viewer to consider.

Eau d’Artifice (1990)

Eau d’Artifice (1990) is an installation that features 35 video monitors stacked into a circular pyramid. These monitors present images and sounds of flowing water in order to construct an electronic fountain within the gallery.

This work demonstrates the coming together of the electronic and digital with the natural. The monitors and video are the digital world, while the running water symbolizes the natural world. These two ideas come together into one unique work. Visitors to the gallery space are encouraged to interact with the monitors featured within this digital work in the same way they would interact with a normal fountain. This encouraged interaction is significant in that it demonstrates how the digital world and the natural world can be similar to one another.

Ultimately, I think this work is successful in that it is not only aesthetically pleasing but it also presents a deeper meaning to the viewer. I think that the concept of utilizing digital and electronic means to recreate something from the natural world (running water) is a very interesting concept as it demonstrates the differences as well as the similarities of the two.

Yacov Sharir’s Automatic Body (1994)

Yacov Sharir’s Automatic Body is a piece of performance art that uses the Particle Swarm Optimization method or PSO, to convert human behaviors into sounds, images and movements. The piece is centered around a “cyber suit” that collects various data from the person who is wearing the suit. Among the data collected by the suit is EEG information, which is then transmitted via radio frequencies to create an image representing the data.

Sharir’s piece is significant in that it demonstrates just what amazing things can be done when you combine various technical computing techniques to create digital art. Being a performance piece also sets Sharir’s work apart from other digital or traditional works. This piece puts on a show for the viewer, making their experience more interesting.

This work is unique in that your physical actions while wearing the suit, create a reaction elsewhere (the final image, sound or movement). One could compare this cause and effect relationship to the social concept of accountability, Each action causes a different reaction.

Ultimately, I believe that this piece is effective. It is unique in that it entertains the viewer on another level, but also that it leaves them with a lot to think about. This piece is also very powerful due to the inclusion of computing techniques. This work would not be the same without the computing techniques incorporated and that says a lot about the positive impact that computing techniques can have on a piece of digital artwork.

Joey Holder’s Digital Baroque (2012)

Photovoltaics_zpsfa43e3d2Digital Baroque (2012) is an exhibition crafted by British artist Joey Holder. This exhibition features a series of abstract images, including both analogue paintings and digital renderings. The abstractions feature ideas and renderings from biology, natural history as well as nanotechnology. These two types of abstractions appear side by side to depict a deeper meaning by demonstrating the separation between the artificial and organic. Artificial and Organic elements seem so different, so why is it that they are able to be mixed together into one art exhibition? Yes, there is a noticeable separation between what is artificial and what is organic, but there also exists a certain harmony between them as well, it all depends on the unique meaning that the viewer derives from the exhibition.

This separation and harmony also exists within the world in a social sense. There is a noticeable separation between the classes, especially the middle, and upper classes, however, although this separation exists, there is also a harmony because without the no class will be successful without the other.

Ultimately, I believe that this work is effective as the separation between artificial and organic exists, but they also work well together in some aspects as we experience both artificial and organic elements together in our everyday lives. The combination and separation of these two elements creates an aesthetically pleasing and unique exhibition.
